Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole

Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole is a comforting take on the classic French dish, Chicken Cordon Bleu, which traditionally involves a breaded and pan-fried chicken breast wrapped around ham and cheese. This casserole version simplifies the process, layering shredded chicken, ham, and cheese in a baking dish with a rich, creamy sauce. Ham Cordon Bleu, another variation, is ham stuffed with mushrooms and cheese.

Ingredients for Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole

  • 6 cups shredded cooked chicken (about 2 lbs)
  • 6 oz ham, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 4 oz butter, melted
  • 6 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp white wine (optional)
  • 1 oz lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 5 oz Swiss cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread the shredded chicken evenly on the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish. Layer the ham pieces on top of the chicken.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the melted butter, softened cream cheese, Dijon mustard, white wine (if using), lemon juice, and salt using an electric mixer. Mix until you get a smooth, thick sauce.
  3. Pour the sauce evenly over the chicken and ham in the baking dish.
  4. Layer slices of Swiss cheese on top of the sauce. Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until hot and bubbly.
  5. For a golden, bubbly cheese topping, broil for an additional 2 minutes. Watch closely to avoid burning.

Tips:

  • If you have dry white wine on hand, it adds a pleasant depth of flavor, but it’s optional.
  • If your shredded chicken is on the dry side, consider doubling the sauce or mixing in 1/4 cup of chicken broth before layering.
  • Chicken tenderloins can be used instead of shredded chicken. Just cook them, drain any liquid, and continue with the recipe.
